The Costs of DPS

About a year ago, we stumbled across the Federal IT Dashboard, which outlines the costs of federal government IT projects, including the Defense Personal Property System (DPS). Last year’s numbers indicated that the Department of Defense had spent nearly $30 million in 2008, and was planning on spending around $20 million in 2009 and 2010. Updated numbers have been released, so we thought it might be a good time to review the updated costs of DPS.

The projected amount for 2009 was estimated last year at $20.065 million. Now that the actual numbers are in, the data from the Federal IT Dashboard shows that this was a very good projection, with the total coming in at $19.661 million. However, the numbers for 2010 have changed significantly. Last year the budgeted amount for the current year was $20.511 million. When looking at the updated numbers, it appears that the government is now planning on spending $33.367 million this year on DPS. This represents a 62% increase in the projected amount to be spent on DPS  in 2010. The budget for 2011 is $25.62 million.

In total, these numbers tell us that from 2008-2011, the DOD will have spent, or is planning to spend, over $108 million on the DPS system, or an average of a little over $27 million per year. At least this year, with DPS becoming the system handling the majority of shipments, the DOD can feel like they are getting something out of their significant investment.
