Yesterday, Sue Fuchtman won an impressive victory in the primary election for Mayor of Norfolk. In the nonpartisan contest, the top 2 candidates out of the field of three advanced to the general election. Most of us expected it to be a very close race, but Sue won easily, capturing nearly 70% of the vote. Her next closest opponent, who will also advance to the general election, received only 25% of the vote. Here is a quote from the website of our local newspaper:

Some races were closer than many might have predicted; others were just the opposite.

The three-candidate race for mayor of Norfolk, for example, was seen by many as a toss-up going into Tuesday’s balloting.

But Sue Fuchtman ended the night with 3,128 votes to easily top the field. In fact, the margin of votes between Fuchtman and second-place finisher Tom Schommer was larger than the margin between Schommer and third-place candidate Larry Sweigard.

Schommer tallied 1,164 votes, while Sweigard had 211.

Both Schommer and Fuchtman advance to the November general election in the race to see who will succeed Gordon Adams as Norfolk’s next mayor.

We celebrated last night with a victory party/birthday party for Sue, since the election fell on her birthday. Check back later today for some pictures from the event.
