Determination of Applicable Fuel Surcharge

Item 513 of the International Personal Property Rate Solicitation and Item 420 of the Domestic Personal Property Rate Solicitation are for Fuel Surcharge within the United States. We’ve often been questioned where we get the applicable fuel surcharge percentage for the month. Fuel surcharge percentage is based on either pickup date of the shipment (for LHS charges) or delivery of out SIT date (for SIT Delivery charges).

In order to correctly compute the percentage, you must look up the average price of diesel fuel on the first Monday of the month. This price then fits into a chart put out by SDDC of price ranges and applicable FSC %. The FSC% changes on the 15th of each month based upon the average price on the first Monday of that month.
